Emergencies

At Cox Orthodontics, we hope to be your premier choice when you’re looking for an orthodontist in or around Goose Creek, North Charleston, Summerville, and Walterboro, SC. We’re proud to provide a number of high-quality orthodontic treatments, such as braces or Invisalign, that prove to be just as comfortable as they are efficient. While we make it our goal to provide the most convenient orthodontic treatment process possible, we understand that sometimes emergencies still occur. Thankfully, there are very few true orthodontic emergencies and most of them can actually be remedied at home. These guidelines that we’ve provided will help you solve most of the minor orthodontic emergencies.

Sore Teeth

After you begin treatment with braces (or after you have an adjustment appointment), your teeth or mouth may feel sore. In this case, we recommend:

  • Taking non-aspirin pain relievers.
  • Gargling with lukewarm salt water (one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of water).
  • Using a warm washcloth or heating pad.

Lost Separator

During treatment, most patients will end up losing a separator. This is normal and you don’t need to worry about it, though you should call our office to see if it needs to be replaced.

Wire Irritations

If the wire is irritating a part of your mouth, try moving the wire away from the area with a cotton swab or an eraser. If the wire doesn’t seem to move, you can try covering the end of it with a small piece of cotton or some orthodontic wax. If the wire is still bothersome, you can cut the part off with nail clippers or scissors that have first been washed and sterilized with alcohol.

Loose Wire

First, try moving the wire back in place with tweezers that have been washed and sterilized with alcohol. If that doesn’t work and part of the wire is poking you, you can place orthodontic wax on that part. If you feel like you have to cut the wire, you can use nail clippers or scissors that have been washed and sterilized with alcohol. Use them to cut the wire behind the last bracket that it’s secured to.

Loose Bracket

You’ll want to first call our office to see if the bracket needs to be refitted. If you feel like you need to cut the wire or slide a bracket off the wire, you can use nail clippers or scissors that have been washed and sterilized with alcohol. Please give us a call on the next business day to schedule an appointment with us.

Improperly Fitting Headgear

If the facebow on your headgear is bent, please call our office and don’t try to adjust it yourself. If your headgear is causing pain, it’s usually because you haven’t worn it enough yet. Please follow your orthodontist’s instructions as to how long it needs to be worn daily.
